Jamie Byrne on Japan

image-jamie-byrne-japanAfter 24hrs of traveling on plane, boat and car I was back in Japan and I couldn’t have been happier. Getting out of the car after a 3hr drive and seeing Kaifu at a fun 2ft, it was a sight for sore eyes. I surfed all afternoon. It was such a great way to start my annual trip to Japan.

The next morning the swell had picked up to around 3 to 4ft and the bank was looking good, really good. A lot of surfing and eating took place over the next few days with lots of good times going down. The swell stuck around for a couple of days until a low pressure system popped off the coast and swell pumped to a solid 8ft with bigger sets. Kaifu was all time and with each day that passed the waves dropped and became picture perfect. 4 to 6 ft right hand river mouth was peeling for about 100 metres, but the best was yet to come.

With almost 3 days of my trip left and most of my work done a typhoon came directly at Shikoku. All the local shops and houses began to board up windows and tie down any loose objects. The surf was already about 15ft with the wind howling onshore, so it didn’t look like there would be surfable waves for the next couple of days. Later that afternoon I arrived back at Kiyataka’s house to find no one there so I rode down to the river mouth to find Kaifu 10ft, light offshore winds and 5 guys out. I raced back , got my board and was out in the line up quicker than you can say udon noodles. For the next 3 hrs I indulged in the best right hander I’ve ever surfed with only my dad and good friend Don Johnson out. It was one of the greatest afternoons I’ve ever experienced. It is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life and a great way to end my trip.

Just like when we arrived the swell had dropped and I was on my way back to Australia with great memories in hand. Japan always surprises me and is one of the best places to travel to. I can’t wait for what experiences I’ll have this year.
